The approach
Most city tours are a drive past some buildings with anecdotes attached. This one is organised chronologically: what life in Kigali was like in each era, and what each era left behind in the city you are standing in. That structure is what makes a half day in the capital worth spending.
The four periods
Colonial. Kigali was founded in 1907 under German administration, as a residency and trading post rather than a capital — the traditional seat of power was the king's court at Nyanza. The first colonial building in the city is still standing and is the usual starting point.
Post-independence. From 1962 Kigali became the capital of the new republic, and the administrative city grew outward from a very small core. This is the period that produced most of the street layout you drive on.
1994. The Hôtel des Mille Collines, known internationally through the film Hotel Rwanda, is a stop on the route, as is Camp Kigali — a small, contained memorial that gives a first introduction to the subject without the weight of the main museum.
The city now. New residential districts, the government quarter, the convention centre, and the sheer pace of construction. Kigali is one of the fastest-changing cities in Africa and the contrast with the first stop on the tour is the point.
Closing at the memorial
Most itineraries finish at the Kigali Genocide Memorial at Gisozi. It is a burial site as well as a museum, and it needs unhurried time — do not schedule anything after it.
